It’s Morbin’ Time

Jared Leto’s Skeletor in the recent Masters of the Universe was a surprisingly strong interpretation as a self-aware, charismatic villain who can be genuinely threatening and humorous at the same time. It’s a bright spot for the actor as he has been the target of a lot of criticism as of late, with him being blamed for Tron: Ares‘ underwhelming performance at the box office and his infamous attempt at a Marvel franchise with Morbius. For its time in the spotlight, Morbius became more popular as a meme than as a movie.

Matt Smith catches Keanu Reeves watching Morbius

One of the popular memes from the film is a scene featuring Matt Smith’s villain character dancing shirtless in a bathroom. DiscussingFilm posted a clip on social media of Smith appearing on Brittany Broski’s Royal Court for an interview and the star admitted that he caught Keanu Reeves watching Morbius on a plane. Smith went into the anecdote when praising Reeves, “I just think he’s the best…he was watching Morbius!” Broski clarified that Reeves was watching Morbius on a flight, which segued into her question to Smith of what he watches on a flight. He responded, “Not fucking Morbius!”

He continued, “Jesus Christ. My God, he must have really gone through the BA library to get into that!”

Sony’s panned “Spider-Man Universe”

Morbius director Daniel Espinosa is more than aware of the reception to his Marvel film, starring Jared Leto as the Living Vampire. He says the project turned out poorly due to Hollywood red tape, COVID-19, and too many cooks in the kitchen. The backlash to Morbius left Espinosa with a cloud of negative emotions as disappointment replaced excitement for the Spider-Man spinoff. “Yes. To make a movie through committee, I think, is very hard, and I felt in the end that maybe a different director would have been a better fit.”

The studio isn’t known for helping movies to turn out well with all the interference. Kevin Feige once broke down all the things he disagreed with when he saw their Amazing Spider-Man 2 script and that film became the last of that franchise era. Then, after Venom became a hit for them, Sony tried to get a Spider-Man Universe going with such films as Morbius, Madame Web and Kraven. All films were massively panned. Even with its criticism, Morbius had opened slightly higher than Supergirl at the box office at $39.1 million while Supergirl opened with $38 million.
